SHELTER FOR THE ELDERLY AND PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES: SUPPORT FOR THOSE WHO NEED CARE THE MOST
For the fifth year, the full-scale war has continued to change the lives of Ukrainians, leaving behind not only destroyed homes but also thousands of people who have lost the ability to care for themselves. The elderly and people with disabilities have been among those most affected, as many are unable to evacuate quickly, find new housing, or live independently without assistance.
That is why the shelter operated by the Christian Mission "New Life" has become more than just a place to stay—it is a safe home where people receive care, protection, and the opportunity to live with dignity.
Behind every resident is a difficult life story. Some lost their homes because of the war. Others became victims of fraud and were left without the only home they owned. Some were evacuated from frontline areas with nothing more than their documents and a few personal belongings. Others spent years struggling with illness alone after losing family members or because their relatives were forced to leave the country and could no longer provide care.
Unfortunately, the number of such stories continues to grow. Every missile or drone attack on civilian communities leaves more elderly people without a home, stability, or family support. For many, even evacuation is nearly impossible, while pensions are often insufficient to cover medicine and basic daily needs.
At the Christian Mission "New Life" shelter, residents receive safe accommodation, nutritious meals, clothing, hygiene supplies, daily care, and medical assistance. When necessary, they are accompanied to medical facilities, receive treatment, and are provided with wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, and other rehabilitation equipment.
Most importantly, however, the shelter gives people something that cannot be measured materially—care, compassion, and the assurance that they are no longer facing their hardships alone. Here, many regain peace of mind, hope, and the opportunity to live in a safe and supportive environment.
Today, the existing shelter can no longer accommodate everyone seeking help. For this reason, the Christian Mission "New Life" is building a new modern residential complex in Velykyi Dalnyk, designed to provide care for 360 elderly people and people with disabilities who require permanent assistance, medical support, and safe living conditions.
The new facility is being designed with accessibility and comfort in mind. It will include barrier-free spaces, a palliative care unit, comfortable rooms, dining areas, places for social interaction, and a chapel. It will be a place where people can feel secure and receive the care they need every day.
Construction is currently underway because the need for such a facility has never been greater. Every new place in this shelter represents a life that can be protected, a person who can receive proper care, and a future filled with hope.
Every day, the Christian Mission "New Life" continues its work so that elderly people and people with disabilities facing difficult life circumstances are not left alone. Together, we can offer them the most important things of all—care, safety, and a dignified life.
