Potatoes as a Lifeline: How the "New Life" Mission Helps Families During the War

March 2026, Odesa Region

There are things you can’t measure in kilograms. It’s the feeling that you’re not alone. That someone remembers you. That there will be food on the table tomorrow.

This is exactly what people who sought help during the latest campaign by the “New Life” mission received, along with potatoes.

Despite the rain, the cold, and constant worries, the volunteers went out to work. Because those waiting for help cannot put off hunger until another day.

This is not a one-time story. The mission works like this every day without pause. They simply do what needs to be done.

Behind this aid lies the joint effort of people from different countries.

Partners from the Netherlands, Friese Rijders voor Oekraïne, have long supported Ukraine not with words, but with actions. Together with them is the Open Door Foundation, which helps connect those who can help with those who need it.

All kinds of people come for help. People with disabilities, families who have fled dangerous regions, large families, and those who find themselves in difficult life circumstances because of the war.

Everyone has their own story. But they all share one need—to survive.

Potatoes may seem like a simple thing. But right now, they’re a lifeline. They’re food that can feed a family for more than just a day.

And most importantly, they give people some breathing room. Instead of spending their last bit of money on food, they can put it toward medicine, utilities, or their children.

One sack of potatoes means one less problem to solve today.

In the current climate of anxiety, power outages, and a difficult situation—this has become the new normal. But even in these circumstances, there are those who don’t stop.

The “New Life” mission simply keeps doing its work. Wherever it’s truly needed.

The campaign has ended, but the needs remain. Every day, new people appear who need support.

That’s why the work doesn’t stop.
