Heat and food: how the first heating station in Odessa works

Since yesterday, a heating station has been operating on the Kulikovo field. It was established by the Christian mission "New Life".

The tent is aimed mainly at people with no fixed abode. During cold weather and bad weather, about 100 people can find shelter here. To keep the tent warm, special infrared heaters are installed. In addition, there is always hot tea and food.

“This is a modern heating point, we got the tent from Europe. It is not heated by potbelly stoves, but by electric infra-red heaters. In case the light turns off, we have a safety net - a diesel gun. A volunteer nurse will always be here in case someone needs medical help, ” said the chairman of New Life Fedor Gerasimov.

According to him, 25 volunteers are involved in the work of the heating station, but they work in shifts. They can also be helped - bring warm clothes, medicines for first aid for frostbite.

For the first day, volunteers say, they took about 300 people. Homeless people like being here more than on the street - they drink tea, read the Bible and newspapers.

“They give food - cereals with dressings, tea and flour. It’s very warm, better than on the street,” the homeless Vasily told us.

According to Fedor Gerasimov, the heating point will work up to plus temperature. During severe frosts and bad weather, everyone can take refuge in it for a while.
